About Jim

Political

Jim Libby is a four-term state senator and two-term state representative, serving in the Maine Legislature from 2022 - 2025 and 1992 - 2000. He was a primary candidate for governor of Maine in 2002. He has served on the Joint Standing Committees for Labor, Education and Cultural Affairs, Natural Resources, Taxation, and State and Local Government. Libby has served as a political consultant to federal and state candidates for office. He has served as and guest host for programming at Maine media outlets, including WGAN Radio’s “Face-Off,” in Portland, Maine.

 

Education
Jim Libby is currently a tenured full professor at Thomas College, where he has been employed since 2002. He served as the Academic Dean at Thomas for three years, from 2013 through 2015.  He holds two degrees from the University of Maine - a C.A.S. in Education Administration and a Ph.D. in Public Policy, as well as a B. S. in Finance from Nasson College, an M.B.A. from St. Bonaventure University. He is a former holder of a Maine Superintendent's Certification.

 

Experience
Jim Libby has been employed by GTE/Sylvania, Hoop Basketball Camp, Corning, Sanford High School, St. Joseph’s College, Thomas College, and Colby College. At Colby, he was a visiting professor of applied economics for six years. He chaired the Department of Business Administration and the Faculty Senate at both St. Joseph’s and at Thomas, as well as directing internship programs and international exchange at both institutions. He has been appointed to several statewide boards and commissions by Republican, Democrat, and Independent governors. He has also served as a trustee for the Maine Community College System, and as tripartite chair for the Maine Labor Relations Board. He served as a trustee for the Waterville Opera House, and was a founding board member for the Jobs for Maine’s Graduates program following involvement in program design as a legislative co-sponsor. Jim Libby currently is a member of the Policy Committee for the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce.

 

Author
Jim Libby has written several articles and published four books, including Super U: The History and Politics of the University of Maine System (2000, Picton Press), and Buxton, A Postcard History (2009, Arcadia Publishing). Super U is considered a primer for incoming trustees working in higher education, particularly in Maine.

 

Coaching and Sport Management
Libby is a basketball enthusiast. He played at Bonny Eagle High School and Nasson College, has coached at Gorham High School, St. Joseph’s College, Thomas College, the Maine Firecrackers, and the semi-professional Maine Bulldogs. He is also involved in local auto racing with his son, Brett.

 

Family
Jim Libby resides with his wife Jennifer and two children, Grace and Brett, in Standish, Maine.
